Who was your first client and what was your first consultation about?

Shauna says... [00:00:30] I got my first customer via my website. I had a very, very, cheaply made website, that did not look great, whatsoever, that simply listed my services. Within a month of having that website live, I had my first three customers, actually, notify me and book services. [00:01:00] The really cool thing about it was that when we got into our first discussions of working together, they said that they had been looking online for so long, for these specific services, and then, you know what, once I started by business, [...]

When did you know you were ready for your first consultation as an image consultant?

Shauna says... [00:00:30] My very first client found me on the web. She was doing a Google search looking for a way to improve her image because of a career transition, and she found me. I just started my business within the month, so it hadn't even been 30 days in business. [00:01:00] She had transitioned from more of a behind the scenes, research type job into more of a supervisor/management type career and was going to be much more in the public scene. She looked a little bit young for her actual age, [...]

Do you ever use Google Adwords to attract business via search engines?

Shauna says... [00:01:30] I'm going to answer this question with another question. I ask you when did the last time click on one of those resource in Google that has been paid advertisements? For those who don't know what I'm talking about, those are those listings on Google you see at the very top and on the right side with a yellow background kind of shadow. I truly believe that this is not interesting for services. If you are in the business of selling services, it doesn't work as well if you are sell [...]

How do you stay on top of image consulting industry news?

Shauna says... [00:00:30] Okay, so hands down for me, the best source for me to stay on top of any sort of industry specific type news, would be setting up Google Alerts, actually. [00:01:00] While I do have a Feedly account that is feeding all my favorite blogs into it, I find it much easier to stay on top of very specific topics like 'body language', or 'image consulting' as a whole, by setting up a digest through Google Alerts. Then on a daily, or a weekly, you can set however you want it [...]

Who are the people that inspire you?

Sylvie says... [00:00:30] On a personal point of view, I'm very much inspired by my brother. I remember being in our children's room at home many, many, many years ago, and he was dreaming of becoming a pilot. [00:01:00] He had airplanes up on the ceiling, hanging there, and there was all this dreaming of that life dream, but on the financial side, it was just not possible, and he was not a very good student in school, too, so there were a lot of, lot of blocks on that road. Now, 40 years [...]

Should I care about my Klout score?

Shauna says... [00:00:30] Klout is a measurement tool to help you track your online influence. That in and of itself, is incredibly important. If you're going to put in the effort to be involved and engaged on social media, you have to absolutely be tracking your analytics, and seeing what's working, and seeing what's not. [00:01:00] If you're just out there tweeting and posting status updates, and on LinkedIn, but you're not at all looking at any of your activity and your analytics, then you're kind of missing the big picture of doing all [...]

What is the last thing you do before bed and the first thing you do when you wake up?

Shauna says... [00:00:30] The last thing that I do before bed usually, is to flip through my Instagram feed and my Twitter feed, since I'm such a social media addict. The first thing that I do when I wake up in the morning is actually an exercise by Julia Cameron, called Morning Pages. [00:01:00] Essentially what that is, is just brain dumping all of your thoughts and free writing into a journal. Do it for three pages. I wake up in the morning, I have a journal by my night stand, and I just [...]

Education first, or should you start learning by doing?

Shauna says... [00:00:30] Learning by doing is an education, so this one's a little bit tricky for me to answer. I kind of believe that that's the point of entrepreneurship and self employment, is that every single thing you do, and every day, is a learning experience, that you're tweaking, evolving, changing based on what you've done. [00:01:00] So, with that being said, I also do believe that you can't just jump into business without anything. You certainly need to have some sort of education and/or experience, and/or background that's relevant as a foundation [...]

What’s your advice for new image consultants with little money and limited cash?

Shauna says... [00:00:30] The nice thing about this business is you don't have a lot of overhead to running this company. You do not need an office space. I would not invest in that in your early years of business if at all. You're going to clients. [00:01:00] You do need a website, you do need business cards, but there are so many inexpensive resources out there for both of those things. A lot of which can be found in our resource hub on our website under marketing tools, and under business tools. In [...]

How do you use Linkedin for your Image Consulting business?

Shauna says... [00:00:30] LinkedIn is actually not a platform that I am super involved with. I make sure to keep my profile updated. I make sure to accept requests in a timely manner. [00:01:00] I make sure to connect with people that I cannot find on other platforms, but from what I know, a lot of people are finding a lot of help and a lot of marketing tools by blogging on LinkedIn. I know for corporate image consulting or more business to business type operations or client engagements, LinkedIn is an excellent platform [...]

How do you attract more local clients for your image consulting business?

Sylvie says... [00:00:30] Well, my response to this question is going to be a tough one because I'm going to tell you do not only attract local clients. [00:01:00] Instead, nowadays we have so many amazing tools that allow us to work with people from all over the world, and even if you might think, for example, that I have a great local market here, which I do, because obviously, I live in New York City, most of my clients actually come from all over the world. Although I am happy that I can [...]

What would you NEVER do again?

Shauna says... [00:00:30] It was a tough one for me because I view everything that's happened as a learning experience that I truly would never take back. [00:01:00] Then I thought of the most obvious one of all that I absolutely will never ever do again by choice. That is to accept a date from a client, because the last time that happened, he became my husband, thankfully, but that will never happen again. Sylvie says... [00:01:30] What would I never ever do again during my career? What I would [...]

What is the next big thing in the image consulting Industry?

Shauna says... [00:00:30] I actually have two things. The first thing, it's been my belief for a very long time now that eventually we will get to a standardized education and certification system. [00:01:00] As anyone knows that's looked to get into this industry, there are a number of options that are all drastically different in terms of the learning styles and the certification programs that are out there. I believe with any new industry eventually it's going to shake down to some sort of standardized curriculum across the world for anyone looking to [...]

Are you a morning person or a night owl?

Sylvie says... [00:00:30] First of all, I'm always surprised about the kind of questions we receive, but obviously for someone it's important to know if I work during the day or at night. I'm the second kind of worker. I'm a night owl, and I perform best past 8 p.m. [00:01:00] Besides the time, I find it very important to realize that most of us have some kind of home business. I only know a few image consultants, and also speakers who actually rent an office and do not work from home. [00:01:30] I [...]

Is the number of followers on social media important?

Shauna says... [00:00:30] There's not a clear yes or no, because it's kind of both. The truth is yes, numbers on social media do mean something. Whenever you see anyone with a large audience anywhere, offline or online, it means something and a crowd tends to follow a crowd. [00:01:00] Now know it is not worth it for you to grow your audience in unethical ways or by purchasing them. That does not work. Yes, it is important in my mind. I do believe it says something perceptually. It definitely gives off a certain [...]

Do you keep strict office hours or is your schedule flexible day-to-day?

Shauna says... [00:00:30] I would say that I do not keep strict office hours, but I also don't have a super flexible schedule day-to-day. I fall right in between, and I like to schedule personally my week to have that flexibility and be a little bit of both. [00:01:00] There are particular days that I like to see clients on, and then there are particular days, like Mondays and Fridays, that I leave to be more like admin days. On Mondays and Fridays I like to have those, I guess you could say, as [...]

Where are the best places to promote your image consulting business online?

Sylvie says... [00:00:30] People who know me will probably think it's social media because I'm very active on social media, but it's actually not, because I invest much more time and effort into search engine optimization. [00:01:00] I make sure that if people look for an image consultant or any other related service in certain areas, as cities, countries, I pop up at page number one. Why is that more interesting? People who explore you on social media, I call them side-surfers. They surf by your Twitter account, they surf by your Facebook page. [...]

What are your tips for choosing an image consulting business name?

Shauna says... [00:00:30] Picking a business name is one of the most difficult parts of starting your business, especially if you have no idea what you want it to be in the beginning. You have a couple options, you can operate simply under your name, you can use your name in a format of it somehow, or come up with a title all together. The most important tips that I can give you is to get feedback from outsiders. [00:01:00] If you come up with some ideas, you want to ask the closest friends [...]

Should you have the same profile picture on all your image consultant social media accounts?

Sylvie says... [00:00:30] This is one of the rare occasions you're going to get the two of us in one video responding to your two by two by two question because we are both in New York City right now. [00:01:00] My opinion on that is yes, that I find it very much important that the profile pictures are consistent over all your platforms just because I find that consistency is a very important part of your business success. Although, when it comes to your website, I think a little bit different because I [...]

Should I use Pop-ups on my image consulting website?

Sylvie says... [00:00:30] So here's my opinion about pop-ups. Are they annoying? Yes, absolutely. Do they work? Yes, absolutely. So my recommendation is to use them even if we all know that it's kind of annoying but obviously they work. [00:01:00] They work every time you want some kind of interaction or something in exchange with your website visitors. I do find that it's important that you use the right pop-up for the right occasion because there are different ones. So for example there are different types like click pop-ups. Somebody clicks on a [...]

When do you raise your image consulting fee?

Shauna says... [00:00:30] Three reasons that you would raise your rate. Number one is when your current rates are not actually covering your expenses. That's a huge problem. Your rates obviously need to be able to cover your expenses and then some. [00:01:00] The second reason that you would need to raise your rates is if your calender is full and you're simply out of time to meet with clients. If you find that your calender is full and you're having a hard time booking people because your schedule is tight then you should [...]

What if image consulting clients ask for a reference and you don’t have one yet?

Sylvie says... [00:00:30] First of all, I would ask myself, why don't you have any references right now under your belt, because very often the reason is that we forget about references we already have or that we simply didn't ask for them. Here is how I make sure that I don't forget about it. [00:01:00] First of all, I already include it into any kind of agreement I offer to my clients. If they sign a contract for me, no matter if it's an individual client or a corporate client, I already announce [...]

How did you decide on your image consulting fee?

Shauna says... [00:00:30] First and foremost, I know exactly what I need to make in order to keep my business up and running. You should absolutely know all the expenses that your business incurs, and what you need to make to pay your bills. [00:01:00] From there you need to determine how many clients, and you can also get your fee out of that. I take into account my budget. I also take into account what my competitors are charging within my location, within my area of specialty and expertise. Then I also take [...]

If you could use only one marketing tool or platform, which one would it be?

Sylvie says... [00:00:30] First of all, I cannot imagine that I am only active on one social media platform, but if I would have to choose one, it would be probably chosen on two facts. [00:01:00] The first one is where is your audience and where does your audience hang out? Where are they active and where do they search for things? The second one is, and I find maybe a little bit more important, what do you really enjoy? Which platform is your favorite one? Where could you imagine to hang out several [...]

Do you schedule time for social media or post randomly for your image consulting business?

Shauna says... [00:00:30] My answer to this question is bull. I do spend time specifically for scheduling out social media activity and marketing messages. [00:01:00] You have to these days with so much content going out there and everything you have to do, it is so efficient to be able to use some of the tools that are available to schedule out your marketing message. But with that being said, social media is just that. It's supposed to be social. My belief about it is that social media is used exceptionally well when you [...]
