Psychology of Color

I have found over the years that many people do not fully understand what an Image Consultant is, what they do or how they help others. Many simply see them as someone who picks out an outfit for you for an event or maybe as people who work with high-end celebrities before the Oscars or Grammy’s.

The truth is that Image Consulting is so much more and is not just for celebrities, the elite or the wealthy. Image Consulting is quickly becoming something that everyone can benefit from.

Today we are going to take a look at some of the most common questions I have heard as an Image Consultant and what their answers are.

1. What is an Image Consultant anyway?

An Image Consultant is someone who helps you to highlight all the greatest things about who you are on the inside through your image, behavior and communication. A professional Image Consultant can help you bring out the inner confidence, strengths and core of who you are by showing how your style and the ways you behave and communicate with others can affect how they see you based on what you want them to see.

2. Who would hire an Image Consultant?

Almost anyone can hire an Image Consultant. We work with everyone from CEO’s, C-Suite level executives and public speakers to that stay at home looking to get back into the workforce or anyone who feels they are not showing on the outside who they truly are or want to be on the inside. Often we are sought out by people looking to get ahead in their careers, figure out the best way to represent themselves to others, or people who feel they are lacking the confidence they need to get what they truly want.

3. How did you find yourself becoming an Image Consultant?

I know for myself, I have always wanted to do something that helped others. I had an eye for fashion and absolutely loved being able to show others how to look their best. I realized very quickly as I began to learn more about the industry, that giving people the confidence to go out and get something they really want was so enjoyable and really gave me a sense of purpose. It was so much more than just fashion and that really made me want to pursue it as a career.

4. Do you need a college degree or intense schooling to become an Image Consultant?

This question is tough because the answer is two-sided. No, you do not need a degree to become an Image Consultant. I know many Image Consultants who never took a college class in their life and are quite successful.

However, there is training provided that can be of huge help to you to become more successful and also to be able to provide credibility to your clients. Some Image Consultants have taken business courses so they felt more comfortable with running their own business as an Image Consultant, but for me, I truly think you can learn a lot from others and from trial and error as well.

I would highly recommend anyone wanting to become an Image Consultant get certified in the field with the proper training, but do not think college is required for this.

5. Do you feel that creating an image for yourself or for others is being fake?

Not at all! The whole point to Image Consulting is to enhance what you already have going for you. It is not about changing yourself into a completely different person or stripping you of your personality. It is about bringing out the inner personality and defining who you are and what you have to offer via your outward appearance and behaviors. It is not about being a fake you. It is about being an authentic you that is confident in who you are and what you can do.

6. Do people lose themselves in the process of the consultation?

I do not find this to be true. If anything, they often find out more about themselves than they realize. Again, this is not about changing who you are. It is about being able to bring out your inner strengths and personality no matter what line of work you are in or what you want to achieve in life or your career.

7. Isn’t this the kind of thing that is only for the rich?

Of course not! When it comes to fashion these days, there is so much out there to choose from and so many ways to get amazing deals on quality items that having a hefty bank account is not a requirement to getting your image where you would like it to be.

8. Do you have any advice for someone who might be interested in becoming an Image Consultant?

If you have a passion to make it work, then you will. I think one of my biggest pieces of advice would be to stop overthinking it and just dive in. I hear from a lot of students that they waited two or three years to get started because they were scared to take the leap and now that they have they wish they would have done it so much sooner. I love to hear that and hate to hear that at the same time because I think we all know what it is like to be stuck in a place or job we are not happy with and I think if there is something you want to do, you just have to take the chance and go for it!
