Becoming a speaker is not a simple road and there are many roads to take along the way.

If you are offering Image or Styling services now, you may have thought about speaking at events, conferences or in company training sessions as a new way to make money.

This can be an excellent way to gain more clients, more confidence and more knowledge, but there are many mistakes we have seen in the past being made.

We would like to save you from at least a few of these mistakes…

Here are five mistakes we have seen Image and Style Consultants make on the road to becoming a speaker.

They don’t become an expert…

In order to speak expertly about something, you must first become an expert in it. Would you go see someone speak on the subject of English if they majored in and only studied History? Probably not. Whether through training, certifications, continued learning courses, a degree or just years of hands-on experience being an expert in what you speak about is necessary to have the credibility to not only the people hiring you but the people listening to what you have to offer.

They don’t offer the right services…

When you choose which lane you choose to drive in (or speak in), you will be able to choose the right services to offer. If you are a motivational speaker, this might be keynote speeches and workshops. If you are an expert in something you may offer special training services or even one-on-one consultations. There are many services you can offer from facilitation to training to coaching and more, but you have to choose the ones that best your lane.

They don’t look professional…

Looking professional to a potential client or someone looking to hire you is not just about the image you project on the outside with your style and dress, but also about the image you project through things like your website, your brochures, your business card and whatever else you may use to promote your services. They need to be in tip-top shape and look like the professional image you want to project and show them.

They don’t do the research…

Simply sending out tons of emails and brochures to possible clients isn’t going to get you many leads, if you are not sending them to the right people and in the right industry for your skills. Do your research on the companies you want to work with and be sure you are reaching out the person who is going to be the one to help you get hired. You will waste less time and money and will much more likely get a gig from your hard work.

They don’t customize their offering…

If you are giving the same exact keynote speech, the same exact workshop or the same exact training to everyone you work with, you are missing a huge opportunity to show off what you can do for your client. There is nothing wrong with having the basic package you offer, but finding out what the clients’ goals are and what they need will help you to provide a customized service that really pinpoints their concerns.
